iMac dust cleaning and fan – hot, loud or sluggish
Last updated:
Quick answer
iMacs collect more dust than MacBooks because they sit in one place and have larger air intakes. After 3-4 years, the cooling system is typically so packed with dust that temperatures climb 15-25°C, the fan ramps to full blast, and performance throttles. A standard tune-up (cleaning + fresh thermal paste) at DKK 1,000-1,500 fixes it and gives the iMac 3-5 years of additional life.
Why do iMacs collect so much dust?
Three reasons:
- Constant operation in the same place. Unlike a MacBook that gets moved around, an iMac draws air from precisely the same spot for years. The dust concentration around the iMac becomes far higher than in a portable setup.
- Larger air intakes. iMacs have larger fans and higher airflow than MacBooks to keep a 27” display and a powerful CPU/GPU cool. More air = more dust.
- Drying effect. The warm air coming out of the iMac dries out its surroundings — and dry dust floats up and into the vents more easily.
What happens if you don’t clean it?
After 3-4 years without cleaning:
- CPU temperature climbs 15-25°C under the same load
- Thermal throttling kicks in — the CPU cuts its frequency to avoid damage
- Performance falls 30-50% subjectively
- The fan runs constantly at full blast to compensate
- The fan bearings wear out faster because of constant high RPM
- Thermal paste dries out and loses its heat transfer
- Eventually: GPU or CPU damage from sustained overheating
Standard tune-up with us
We have a standard “iMac tune-up” service:
- Complete disassembly — the screen is unbonded with specialist tools
- Cleaning of every heatsink fin, fan blade and ventilation channel with compressed air and a brush
- Wiping off old thermal paste with isopropyl alcohol
- Application of premium thermal paste (Arctic MX-6 or equivalent)
- Testing of the fan bearing and RPM ramp
- Reassembly with fresh adhesive
- Stress testing to confirm the new performance
Takes 90-120 minutes, costs DKK 1,000-1,700 depending on model. You get a warranty and typically 5-10°C lower CPU temperatures under the same load.
Prevention
- Position the iMac so air can circulate — not flush against a wall, not in a closed cabinet
- Vacuum around the iMac regularly — especially under and behind it
- Avoid smoking and open fires in the same room — particles are worse than ordinary dust
- Do a tune-up every 3-4 years even if nothing seems wrong — it’s far cheaper than a logic board repair after overheating
Where can I get it done?
We’ve done hundreds of iMac tune-ups over the years. Bring the iMac to us, or send it via GLS/PostNord — we can also arrange pickup if you’d rather.
How to assess whether your iMac needs cleaning
⏱ PT3M
- Install iStat Menus or Macs Fan Control. Both are free to try and show real-time CPU, GPU and PSU temperatures, plus fan RPM.
- Let the iMac sit idle for 5 minutes. Close all apps. Idle CPU temperature should be 35-50°C. Idle fan RPM should be 1,000-1,500.
- Stress with Geekbench or 4K YouTube. Run a CPU test. Check the temperature after 10 minutes.
- Read the critical values. If the CPU hits 95°C+ under normal use, or the fan runs 3,000+ RPM at idle, the iMac needs cleaning.
- Book a cleaning with us. We typically do a tune-up the same day or the next day.
