MacBook battery – replacement, lifespan and signs of failure

Last updated:

Quick answer

A MacBook battery typically needs replacing after 800–1,000 full charge cycles or 4–5 years of use. If you see 'Service Battery', short battery life, or a swollen battery, it needs replacing — not repairing. We replace batteries on every MacBook model with original or quality-approved cells, and a warranty.

Why does your MacBook only last an hour?

When a MacBook no longer holds charge like new, it’s almost always the battery — not macOS, not an app, and rarely a hardware issue elsewhere. Lithium-ion cells lose capacity over time, and after 4–5 years or 1,000 full charge cycles, capacity has typically dropped 20–40%.

The clearest signs that your battery needs replacing:

  • “Service Battery” or “Replace Soon” in System Information
  • Spontaneous shutdowns — often when the battery shows 20–30% but is actually empty
  • Rapid drain — from 100% to 0% in under 2 hours of light use
  • Visible bulging on the underside, or a trackpad that “clicks poorly”
  • No charging even when the charger is plugged in and working

Where can I get a MacBook battery replaced?

We specialise in Apple hardware and have experience with every MacBook model — including the tricky glued Pro batteries. We use original or quality-approved cells, you get a warranty, and you can typically have it back the same day or the next.

Unlike general PC workshops, we know exactly how to disassemble a MacBook without damaging the keyboard, trackpad or display cable — and we handle swollen batteries (which are a safety hazard) safely.

How to extend your battery’s lifespan

Until you replace the battery, you can extend its life with these tips:

  1. Use Optimised Battery Charging (on by default in newer macOS). It learns your habits and holds the battery at 80% until you need it.
  2. Avoid being constantly at 100%. Batteries wear fastest when stored fully charged at high temperatures.
  3. Keep the MacBook cool. Use it on a flat, hard surface so the fans can draw air. See our guide to overheating and fans.
  4. Disable heavy background apps. Check Activity Monitor for energy hogs.
  5. Don’t store your MacBook empty for months. If you’re putting it away, charge it to about 50% first.

How to check your MacBook battery's health

⏱ PT2M

  1. Open the Apple menu. Click the in the top-left corner and select 'About This Mac'.
  2. Open System Information. Click 'More Info...' or 'System Report' (depending on your macOS version).
  3. Find the battery section. Select 'Power' in the left sidebar under Hardware.
  4. Read the Cycle Count and Condition. If 'Cycle Count' is above 1,000, or 'Condition' shows 'Service Recommended' or 'Replace Soon', it's time for a replacement.
  5. Book a repair. Get in touch with us for a no-obligation quote on a battery replacement.

Frequently asked questions

What does a MacBook battery replacement cost in Denmark?
Between DKK 1,000 and DKK 2,600 depending on model — DKK 1,000-1,200 for older Unibody/Air models, DKK 1,300-1,500 for Pro Retina 13'', DKK 1,900-2,200 for Touch Bar/M1/M2 13'', and up to DKK 2,200-2,600 for Pro 14''/16'' M-series. See the current price for your specific model at macmo.dk/reparation. With us: free diagnosis, a fixed quote before we start, and 2 years' warranty.
How many charge cycles does a MacBook battery last?
Apple rates newer MacBooks for 1,000 full charge cycles. In practice we see most batteries last 4–6 years under normal use. Check your cycle count under → About This Mac → System Information → Power.
What does 'Service Battery' mean on a MacBook?
'Service Battery' means the battery's health has dropped below ~80%, or that macOS has detected a fault in the charging circuit. The MacBook still works, but capacity is reduced. This is the right time to bring it to us for a replacement.
Is it dangerous to use a MacBook with a swollen battery?
Yes. A swollen battery can damage the trackpad, keyboard and logic board — and in rare cases overheat. Shut the MacBook down, stop charging it, and bring it in for repair as soon as possible. We handle swollen batteries safely.
Can I replace the battery myself?
Technically yes, but newer MacBooks have glued-in batteries that require heat and isopropyl alcohol for safe removal. Mishandling can puncture the cells and start a fire. We recommend sending it to us.
